How to Install a Doorbell Button: Wired Doorbells

Please note that if you are uncomfortable installing electrical products, please hire a qualified electrician.
First, choose a replacement wired doorbell button. If you want a different style of doorbell button, make sure the replacement will fit. Be prepared, for example, to at least add a little paint around a new rectangular doorbell button if you’re replacing a round doorbell button.
Other times, the space might have been specifically designed for the doorbell, and it might require more intervention than you want to make a replacement.
Note: If you have an older doorbell, test the voltage across the button before selecting a replacement. All doorbells have a door chime transformer that reduces the voltage from the house line (120 volts (V) and normally 15 amps) to something much less. This makes it safe to touch the wires that lead to the doorbell button but not other wires in the house or the doorbell.
However, current doorbells use a smaller voltage (16 V or 12 V) than earlier doorbells, which use a higher voltage (36 V or 24 V). When a doorbell button rated for a lower voltage is installed in a higher voltage doorbell, the doorbell can get hot, especially if the doorbell button has a light in it.
Next, remove the old doorbell from the wall by unscrewing it. If you haven’t previously removed it for testing, you might have to cut away caulk or paint. Now, unscrew the wires. As we mentioned above, you don’t have to turn the power off for this because the voltage is very low, but if it makes you feel safer, there’s no harm in turning the power off.
If the wires seem to want to slip back into the house, a clothespin or other large clip can be used to hold them outside the wall so they don’t go in—fishing them back out can be nearly impossible.
Now screw the wires onto the new doorbell. It doesn’t matter which wire goes where. So long as both have good connections, the bell should work fine. Twist the wire around the screw in a clockwise arc so that the wire has more connection and the action of the screw pulls the wire in rather than pushes it out.
If the doorbell has a light on it, this should be lit up when you connect the wires. Test the button before you put it back on the wall. If it doesn’t work, check the connections on the wires. If these seem fine, disconnect and touch one to the other to ensure you get a tone. If you don’t, you likely forgot to turn the power back on before trying your test.
If the doorbell is working, put caulk around the back of the doorbell before securing it in place. This will keep air and bugs from using your doorbell as an entry and exit. Once the caulk is dried, you can touch up the paint around the doorbell as necessary.
How to Install a Doorbell Button: Wireless Doorbell
Once you select your new wireless doorbell button, you must ensure it is coded properly before it will work for your receiver. Open the doorbell button and look for a series of metal pins in two rows. Typically, they will have some black plastic blocks on them, but sometimes, these aren’t in place on a new wireless doorbell button.
Now open the compartment on your receiver. You should see a similar arrangement of pins with black plastic blocks. Match the blocks on your new doorbell button.
Then, replace the receiver in the socket (if necessary) and push the button. If the button doesn’t work, it’s possible you misaligned the two units when trying to match them up—it can be hard to tell which way to hold them—so try a mirror image on the new button.
If it still doesn’t work, maybe the factory-installed battery is faulty. Try a new battery. If it still doesn’t work, the wireless doorbell button may be defective.
If you are installing a new wireless doorbell, attaching the wireless doorbell button to the wall can be challenging. For many surfaces, such as wood, you can just put screws through the holes provided in the backing of the doorbell button.
If you’re lucky, the screw holes on the back of the wireless doorbell button might even match those from an old wired doorbell button. Other times, you may have to put a block of wood in to allow you to screw the new doorbell where the old one was.
Two-sided tape works well on many smooth surfaces, such as wood, aluminum, or vinyl siding. Often, this comes with the wireless doorbell button, but you may have to buy it separately.
Other surfaces, such as stucco or brick, can be a bit more challenging to attach the button to. If the brick is relatively smooth (especially if it’s painted), you should try two-sided tape, but if it’s rough or has grooves in it, it’s probably not worth the effort.
In this case, one good solution is poster putty, such as you might have used in your college dorm room or rental property where you weren’t allowed to put holes in the wall. Some brands are better than others, but if you try a few, you’ll find one that grips the rough surface and can hold your wireless doorbell button up quite well.
If you want a secure hold for your wireless doorbell on these surfaces or if you don’t want to bother with the trial-and-error of poster putty, you can secure the doorbell with screws. Masonry screws usually are too large for the holes on the back of a wireless doorbell button, so you have to drill holes and place anchors. This is a bit more work, but on the plus side, you won’t have to worry about your doorbell falling occasionally, as tends to happen with double-sided tape or poster putty.

The short article below instructs how to program an LRA push button to a receiver. In this case, the receiver is the LRA-DCRX battery-operated receiver. Although these instructions are for programming a push button, the process is similar. For a different transmitter (sensor), trigger the sensor in “Step 4” below rather than pushing the center push button. Please consult those manuals for specific instructions on other receivers, such as the LRA-VPRX portable receiver or the LRA-DCRXS plugin receiver.
The LRA-DCRX, LRA-DCRXA, and LRA-VPRX each have four zones.
Each zone can only have one (1) transmitter at a time stored in that zone’s memory.
It does not matter what Zone you program or pair your transmitter(s) to. They are all the same. The purpose of the zones is to allow you to assign a distinct melody to each zone so that you may determine what sensor triggered the receiver.
When trying to pair a transmitter, such as the LRA-DSTX, LRA-DCTX, & LRA-PBTX, if there is already a transmitter paired to a zone, then you must delete that memory for the zone to program the new transmitter to the zone.
Even though you may not have intentionally paired a transmitter to a zone, it’s good practice to delete the zone and start over if you have trouble programming. For more information on deleting a zone from memory, click here.
The instructions below illustrate pairing a push button (LRA-PBTX) to a receiver (LRA-DCRXA). The process for pairing other receivers is similar. Please click here for information on pairing the LRA plug-in strobe receiver and the LRA-DCRXS.
Once you are in programming mode (step 3 below), the unit will automatically exit programming mode after 10 seconds.
To Program an LRA Push Button, Open the Cover of the Receiver
Ensure the receiver has fresh batteries, or you are using a plug-in wall transformer to power the unit.
Open the cover of the receiver.
Press & hold the “Zone selector button” for approximately three (3) seconds until the strobe light flashes, and zone “ID” one (1) starts to blink. Then, stop pressing the Zone selector button.
IMPORTANT: If you want to program or pair a transmitter to Zone ID 1, move to the next step. If you already have a transmitter/sensor programmed to Zone ID 1 and want to pair an additional sensor/ transmitter, push the Zone selector button to scroll to the zone ID you want to program. Once the Zone ID you want to program the sensor blinks, move to the next step.
Press the “Melody selector” button to scroll through the melodies available on this receiver. Stop pressing the Melody selector button when you hear the melody you would like to program to that zone.
Press the button on the push button transmitter.
If you have additional transmitters/receivers to program, go back to step 4. Otherwise, go to the next step.
Now your transmitter(s) are programmed to the receiver. To exit programming mode, press the Zone selector button to scroll through the Zones. Once you pass Zone ID 4, the unit will automatically exit programming mode.

What are driveway alarms?
Driveway alarm systems are products that send an alert when a car (or person depending on the model) passes through a monitored zone. Similar to an entrance alert system, these products usually consist of a combination of wireless transmitters (sensors) and plug-in or battery-operated receivers. The main difference between a driveway alarm product and an entrance alert product is the coverage of the sensor. Driveway alarm sensors will tend to shoot out a more narrow, straight beam, with the intent to shoot the beam across a driveway, whereas an entrance alert sensor will tend to emit more of a fan-based or conical-shaped beam.
Technically speaking, these products use the term “driveway” although they have many more uses. For very large openings, like a mall entrance, these work great. Simply set the sensor a foot or so off the ground and shoot the beam straight across the opening. When a visitor enters your store, the clerks will hear a gentle chime sound, alerting them they have a visitor.
Three basic types of Driveway Alarms:
The big differentiation between driveway alarm systems is the type of sensor. Below is a brief explanation of the types of sensors, with the pros and cons of each
Passive Infrared, Motion Based Sensors: These sensors use a small cell inside the sensor to detect the combination of heat and movement to activate. When activated, they will generate a signal. The benefit of these types of sensors is their versatility in that they will detect anything (with a heat signature) that passes through the detection zone. A leaf, for example, should not set off the sensor because it does not have a heat signature.
Pros – These are great when you want to know if a personal, animal, or car enters your driveway or other monitored area.
Cons – If deer, skunks, or other animals pass through the monitored zone, they will set off the alarm. Some homeowners want to know when anything passes through, some just want to be alerted when a car passes through. With that said, there are some “tricks of the trade” you can use to position the sensor to not detect animals – call for details. These are the easiest sensors to install.
Magnetometer-based sensors: These types of sensors work by emitting a magnetic field. When something with a magnetic field passes through the monitored zone, it essentially changes the magnetic field of the sensor. When this happens, the sensor is triggered.
Pros: These sensors will ONLY pick up large metallic objects like cars and trucks. It will not be triggered by motion from animals, humans, etc.
Cons: Typically these sensors need to be buried (not very deep) parallel (next to) or under the driveway. Sometimes, metallic rock or large metal objects next to the sensor may interfere with the sensor’s ability to see the small fluctuations in its magnetic field.

Pneumatic sensors – These are the sensors used in Driveway Signal Bell Kits you see commonly used at gas stations and dry cleaner facilities. A rubber hose is laid across a driveway and when a car rolls over the tube, the generated air pressure triggers a device to generate a signal. In some models, a receiver is wired to the sensor to trigger an alarm bell or chime, while other models use a device to generate a wireless signal that will generate a chime sound at a remote location.
Pros – These models are extremely reliable.
Cons – must lay the hose across the monitored surface. The surface must be hard.
