When a large metallic object passes through the magnetic zone (10′-12′) emitted by the probe, it triggers the transmitter to send a signal to the compatible receiver. It does not trigger until a car drives over or near the buried magnetometer probe sensor.
As stated above, the transmitter/sensor is buried underneath the driveway or parallel. If you want to use it for a driveway gate alarm, it must be buried under or directly parallel to the driveway gate. The driveway probe sensor ships with 50′ of wire that connects the buried driveway sensor to a small black box. This box is usually mounted on a post or a tree near the driveway. When a metallic object drives over the probe, the black box transmits a radio signal up to 5,000 ft. to the compatible receiver, the DCR-4000, and/or the PR-4000 portable vibrating driveway chime receiver.
The receiver in the kit is the DCR-4000 receiver. Simply plug the receiver into a standard wall outlet and program it to the transmitter/sensor by picking one of twelve available melodies. When triggered, the receiver will play that tune. The receiver may be located up to 1 mile from the transmitter, line-of-site. Environmental factors such as hilly terrain, wooded areas, and building materials will reduce the transmission range; however, with a range of up to 5,000 ft., this setup works in most scenarios.
The receiver has 12 sounds, with four-volume adjustment levels from mute to approximately 85 dB. The transmitter and receiver are compatible with all Dakota products in the 4000 series, such as the UT-4000 and the DCMA-4000 Driveway Monitoring System. I have an older model of this system. The wire at the driveway has been cut (during installation of a lighting system) and we cannot find the wires to the Dakota near the driveway. Can I just get the wire and transmitter and attach it to the receiver which is already attached to a tree? Thank you.

After spending money on motion type detectors (lots of false alarms) and reviewing devices I went with the Dakota DCPA-4000. It arrived fast and after a quick YouTube review to get familiar with the unit I set it up. My drive is very long and the house sits just over a small hill. The unit works perfectly!! I installed the receiver just inside the house at a exterior window sill (400′). While I have security cameras for the property I wanted a alert when a vehicle came up the drive and it did not disappoint. It’s been installed for roughly 1.5 weeks and no false alarms. So far the dogs have not figured out the alarm noise but I’m sure once they recognize the noise they will be my backup alert when the unit activates. My husband found this item online, and since we have a long rural driveway (1000′) with a farm gate, and our house can’t be seen from the road due to all the trees, a “remote doorbell” seemed like such a great idea — and it is! Yes, both the sensor/transmitter featured in the DCPA-4000 (which is the DCPT-4000) and the DCMT-4000 you mentioned may be programmed/paired to the same receiver.
The DCPA-4000 kit comes with one sensor/transmitter (DCPT-4000) and one receiver, the DCR-4000. The DCR-4000 will work with up to 15 different transmitters/sensors.
If both sensors are paired to the receiver (The DCR-4000), the receiver will play the selected melody for that sensor. For example, if the DCPT-4000 is triggered, you may have the receiver (DCR-4000) play the ding-dong sound, and when the DCMT-4000 is triggered, you could have the receiver play the sound melody or a different one.

Shipped the day after I ordered it, arrived by UPS three days later, installed in my driveway the next day. Easy to installed, worked perfectly. It was nice to have 50′ of cable to be able to place it exactly where I wanted it – center of the driveway. I ended up cutting off approximately 15′ of cable and made new terminal connections, it was nice to have that option. I hid the receiver in a out of way corner in the house with no reception issues, (didn’t need to be in a window). Nice product.
